Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening or teeth bleaching is a cosmetic dental treatment used to whiten the tooth enamel. The tooth pigmentation could discolour due to tea, coffee, age, red wine, tobacco, and medications and this treatment helps to reduce tooth staining. Your smile is important, and tooth whitening can help it look its best.

The process involves the use of a peroxide gel which is added to a mouth guard type tray, which ensures perfect contact with the surface of the tooth.

What options do I have for teeth whitening?

There are many options available on the market today. Some are at-home kits, but some will be done in the dentist’s office. We offer a variety of different options.

Your dentist can recommend the best treatment for you, depending on the colour and staining you are experiencing. If, for example, you have darkly stained teeth because of coffee or tetracycline medication, an in-office treatment would likely be recommended.

For the best whitening – here are some of the benefits of having tooth whitening:

  • Long lasting
  • Fast and convenient
  • Proven to be safe and effective
  • Performed by a professional
  • Low sensitivity.

In-Office Whitening

The best solution for those suffering from tetracycline medication-stained teeth would be in-office deep bleaching.

A protective cream is applied by the dentist before the whitening gel. This is applied over the gums and other soft tissue to protect them. Once the whitening gel is applied, a laser can be used to speed up the whitening process.

It can often take more than one dentist visit for the in-office treatment to be complete.

At-Home Whitening

Depending on the result desired, your dentist might recommend an at-home teeth whitening kit. It usually takes around 10-15 treatments but is more cost efficient than in-office bleaching.

An at-home tooth whitening kit uses a 10% carbamide peroxide solution and a custom-fitted mouthguard. The solution, therefore, stays in good contact with the enamel of your teeth.

After the desired results have been achieved, you can ‘touch-up’ your teeth once or twice a year to keep that beautiful smile looking fresh.
